Wreck Appreciation course

Minimum entry level: BSAC Ocean Diver, or equivalent.

This course is designed to enable divers to dive safely on wrecks and to recognise and appreciate what they see.

The course aims to give an appreciation of what wrecks are: historical timecapsules, artificial reefs and havens for marine life. Course content includes:

  • how to get information on wreck sites
  • how to identify the major parts of a wreck
  • additional equipment and techniques needed for wreck diving
  • marine diversity on wrecks
  • laws and responsibilities relating to ‘wreck’
  • how to make basic site sketches
  • ecouragement for further wreck study.


    Course programme

    6 x short theory lectures
    3 x dry practical lessons
    1 x dry workshop on site drawing
    2 x open water lessons (on a hard boat out of Weymouth)

    Theory lessons and dry practicals and workshops will be run over three weeks on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 10.00pm in our lecture room.

    Open water lessons will be run on a two day boat out of Weymouth.


    Student requirements

    For this course, all students will need:

  • notebook and pencil
  • full open water diving equipment
  • torches, reels and waterproof slates
  • windproofs and sun protection as appropriate.

    Course pack including student manual and qualification card on successful completion of course is £23.00 + P&P*

    Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) Accreditation

    This course is recognised by the Nautical Archaeology Society.

    Full completion of the course entitles NAS members to claim six contact points towards their NAS part three certification (ship technology section).
