For beginners...

Course costs
As a club, all of our courses are much cheaper than profit making dive organisations as we do not have to pay our instructors anything other than occasional out-of-pocket expenses. Usually there is a small charge for training material packs and new trainees will normally need to hire kit.

Subsidised kit hire
All of our kit is fully maintained and costs more to supply than to hire out. We acknowledge that learning to dive is expensive when you start out, so we offer our kit at subsidised hire prices to enable students to purchase kit slowly when they understand more about what they are buying.

Small group learning
We try to ensure that group sizes are kept small. Course lectures are held as a group (usually 4-8 students) but for pool training we normally allocate one instructor to each buddy pair of trainees. In open water, we train on the same ratio. If students are learning at a different rate we may re-arrange buddy pairs so that each student learns at a pace appropriate to them.

Other training
Alongside the Ocean Diver (entry level) course, we run a drysuit training course for students who would prefer not to complete their open water assessments in wetsuits. This takes place once students are fully competent in the swimming pool and prior to open water lessons.

For qualified divers...

Enjoying the sport
As a qualified diver you will have the opportunity to book on dive boats appropriate to your qualification level. If required we can buddy you up with another club member as appropriate to your needs. If UK diving is new to you, we'll introduce you at the right level and ensure you dive with a more experienced buddy.

Ongoing training
We run a number of more advanced level training courses as well as a wide variety of skills development short courses within the club. There is also opportunity for refresher courses and skills practice both in the pool and at the training lakes.

The bigger picture
Our diving members may also take part in a range of subsidised training courses run by the BSAC regions including instructor training. So if you are looking for something more specialised and/or we are not running the particular course you want at the time you want, then check the BSAC website for their annual diary of events.

In general...

Caring and sharing
As part of a club it is quite usual for members to share experiences in the bar and even to loan kit for pool try out for members who are thinking of purchasing new equipment. We run at least one UK dive boat most weekends from April to October and there is usually at least one foreign holiday trip arranged each year and/or UK holiday so there is plenty of diving for you to choose from.

Unlimited pool use on club nights
The club has exclusive use of the competition swimming pool most Thursday evenings throughout the year from 8.30pm to 10.00pm. Members may use the pool to try out kit, practice skills, take part in training/refreshers snorkel or swim.

And the
disadvantages?

No quick fix!

As a club, we generally train over a number of week nights using the classrooms and swimming pool. Whilst we try to be flexible and help people catch up if they cannot make a particular evening, members do need to be prepared to commit to a training programme of a number of weeks if they sign up for one of our training courses.

For entry level Ocean Diver courses, we have recently introduced a two day theory course as an alternative to weekly theory lessons but the pool sessions are still spread over a 6 – 8 week period. Open water sessions will take place over 2 or 3 days (usually single days at weekends).

In summary, we do not offer a quick-fix 'learn it in a week' solution!

In addition, because we dive mainly in the UK, there may be a gap between pool training and open water sessions if the weather is too cold. We see this as an advantage, as we are able to fit in extra catch up sessions if needed and it gives new members time to meet other members to form friendships and explore kit options. We also fit in filler courses such as drysuit training so that students are better prepared for their open water sessions.

But if you are looking for that ‘quick fix’ option, you are probably better off taking your first qualification with an approved holiday agency or a local BSAC, PADI or other approved dive training school. But remember to come back and join us once you are qualified...there are always opportunities for further training should you want them. And more importantly, you will want some friends to dive with once you have your diving certificate!
