Skill Development Course

Chartwork and Position Fixing

Minimum entry level: BSAC member


This course is designed to instruct members in the basic techniques of marine navigation and dive site location.  

The course aims to instruct divers to a level which will help them as active divers in planning and managing dives undertaken by a typical BSAC branch.. Course content includes:

  • chart and measurement basics
  • tides
  • position fixing methods 
  • finding dive sites
  • voyage planning
  • practical navigation afloat

    Course programme

    3 x theory lectures and dry practical sessions
    1 x open water lessons

    Theory lessons and dry practicals will normally take place over a series of  Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 10.00pm in our lecture room.

    Open practical will be run on a one day boat, usually out of Weymouth.


    Costs 

    Course pack club members price is £23.00 + P&P*. 

    Students will also need to pay for boat charter fees and personal travel expenses. A small contribution may also be required towards Instructor out of pocket expenses.
