Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course

Minimum entry level: anyone over the age of 12 with up-to-date skills and knowledge of current ‘Basic Life Support’ protocols*. Little or no knowledge and experience of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) is required. 

*For example, BSAC Sports Diver or Oxygen Administration courses or other equivalent training.

This course is designed to train divers and others involved in BSAC diving activities in the use of AED during a diving emergency situation. It is strongly recommended that attendees also attend refresher training for ‘Basic Life Support’ skills in conjunction with this course.

The course draws particular attention to precautions required in the diving environment according to Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines. Course content includes:

• revision of knowledge of the human heart
• introduction to heart rhythms and defibrillation
• introduction to the AED and its use in diving situations
• revision of diagnosis of cardiac arrest and basic life support
• practice Basic Life Support with AED protocols for a range
  of possible scenarios
• buying a system and further training.

Course programme

4 x theory lessons
2 x practical lessons

The whole course is 2.5 hours duration and is normally run over one or two Thursday evenings from 7.30pm – 10.00pm in our club lecture room.

Course certification

Certification will be issued to students who complete the course satisfactorily. The BSAC considers that on completion of this course, students will remain competent in the skills taught for twelve months. After this time a refresher is recommended. Refresher training will also be required for any further training which is dependent on these skills and knowledge.

Usually free to club members with full diving membership.
